The Chaps baseball team had a busy Easter weekend playing April 9-11.
Midland College didn't have much luck Thursday, April 9, losing 16-13 against El Paso Community College. MC went through four pitchers as El Paso kept upping the score.

"Thursday night was a tough loss," said sophomore Brandon Williamson in the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
The Chaps came back Friday, April 10, as a different team ready to play in a doubleheader against the Tejanos again.

MC got the job done beating El Paso 10-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
MC pitchers Travis Lawler and Williamson both had great games not letting the Tejanos get any further from the batter's box. Both Kris Pearce and Toby Semler hit doubles in the bottom of the first inning of the first game.

MC completed their series on a high note Saturday, April 11, defeating El Paso once again with a 7-5 victory.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Jamie Storey was on the mound for four innings and only gave up two runs.

MC's Logan Bawcom hit a two-run homerun and Pearce hit a triple and a double in the third inning.

"I liked how we bounced back after the first game on Thursday and won the next three. Overall, it was a good weekend," Storey said.

The Chaps won three out of the four-game series against New Mexico Junior College in a doubleheader, Friday and Saturday, April 3-4. MC's offense proved to be too much for the Thunderbirds April 3 in New Mexico when the Chaps beat them 7-3 in game 1 and 25-10 in game 2.

The Chaps were back at their home turf April 4 at Christensen Stadium. MC had a 21-11 victory in the first game but lost the second 16-3. MC pitcher Dave Worsham came in as relief after the Thunderbirds scored six runs off of sophomore Taylor Walton.

"I thought I played well and we ended up winning. It was a good game," Worsham said.

Chaps' Trey Whaley and Bawcom both had homeruns putting up big numbers on the scoreboard. These big plays got the Chaps the win in the first game. The momentum began to slow in the second game after MC pitcher Storey left the mound after four innings.

"I didn't play my best, but overall we had a good weekend," Storey said.

"We played great all three games and then hit a slump in the fourth. It was a heartbreaking loss," said catcher Trent Hudson.

Storey agreed. "Losing stings, but looking beyond that, we had a really good weekend. We didn't win all four games, but we did win the series."

MC ran over the University of the Southwest Junior College Wednesday, April 1, in a doubleheader.

MC run ruled the Mustangs after five-innings in each game and put up 15 runs in the third inning of the first game. This momentum shut down the Mustangs, and the Chaps got the victory with a final score of 31-3.

The same energy carried over into the second game. MC's Jake Cimerhanzel and Brian Perry hit home runs. The Chaps ultimately defeated USJC 11-0 in the second game. The Chaps faced a four-game series Saturday and Sunday afternoon, March 28-29, against Clarendon College and went for a three-game victory.

Bawcom came in as a closer to solidify MC's 4-3 victory in game one Saturday.

The same momentum then carried on into the second game to beat Clarendon 8-2. Baseball coach David Coleman, said in the MRT, "I thought our starting pitching in both games gave us a tremendous chance. I thought Logan was really key to finishing that first game off. Then (Travis Lawler) in game two gave us a solid, solid start. Then (Michael) Schulle came in with runners at first and second and against the middle of their order and he was able to pitch out of it. I thought that was the turning point of that game."

The Chaps set out March 29 to defeat Clarendon again, but came up short in game one when the Bulldogs run-ruled the Chaps in the sixth-inning with a score of 12-1.

In the final game of the series, MC came back and ultimately run-ruled Clarendon, 13-3. The Chaps had 15 hits in the final game, three of them triples.

"You sweep on the first day and you would like more as a coach, you always do, but realistically to beat that team four times would be difficult to do," Coleman said in the MRT. "Going into the weekend, I thought if we took three out of four would be exceptional, and we did that. I'm tickled to death with it."
