Golf team heads to nationals for 22nd straight year

ROSWELL, N.M. - The Midland College golf team continued its hot shooting on Tuesday afternoon at the NJCAA Region V Championship as a final round 279 gave the Chaparrals a 13-stroke victory at New Mexico Military Institute Golf Course.
This is the 22nd straight year that the Chaps have qualified for the national tournament.
"This was an outstanding performance by all five team members," MC coach Delnor Poss said. "They shot 17-under par as a team."
The Chaps shot a 281-287-279-847, ahead of second place McClennan Community College, which shot a 292-288-280-860, and Frank Phillips College, which shot a 294-288-278-260.
MC's Henrich Frylink shot a 70 in the final round to finish with a 208 for the tournament. He finished one stroke ahead of New Mexico Junior College's Zach Fullerton who also shot a final round 70 and finished at 209 for the tournament.
Frylink's teammate Tommy Sikes finished third overall with a 70 on Tuesday, which gave him a 210 total for the three days. Everybody on the team finished in the top 20 with Darryn Els finishing in a 14th,-place tie with Tyler Sheppard and David Thomas finishing in 18th.
"I am impressed with everybody," Poss said.
The MC golf team finished the first day of the regional tournament in first place shooting 281-287-568.
The team was 11 strokes ahead of McClennan Community College which finished the first day 291-288-579.
The MC golf team also competed in and finished the Texas State Junior College Championships on Tuesday, April 7 in second place behind Lon Morris College.
"Our team performed with a lot of effort and played well under the circumstances," MC men's golf coach Delnor Poss said in the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
"Our second place finish was disappointing, but I'm pleased with the effort."
MC shot a final round 298 to finish with a three-round total of 921. Close behind for third place was Tyler Junior College, which shot a final round of 297 with a three-round total of 924. Lon Morris College won with a final round of 293 and three-round total of 908.
MC finished the tournament 313-310-298-921.Sikes finished the tournament at 228 tying him for fifth place with teammate Darryn Els.
The top 10 finishes make Sikes and Els first-team All State. Sikes finished the tournament 81-74-73-228. Els finished the tournament 78-78-72-228.
